September call-ups preview: Prospects to watch

For many MLB teams, the September call-up period is just a chance to add arms to the bullpen, or perhaps a defensive replacement for the late innings. That's not to say those things aren't valuable, but we would forgive you for not finding that terribly interesting.

For other teams, however, the roster expansion (to 40 players) and subsequent call-ups are a bit more exciting. As the higher-level minor league seasons come to a close, teams have a chance to add advanced prospects to the big league club without losing roster flexibility. For clubs in contention, that could mean adding a helpful piece for the stretch run. For clubs not in contention, it's a chance to get an extended look at a few of their top prospects to see if they're ready to contribute in 2017. In those cases, it adds another fun element to watching baseball in September.

There's no guarantee that these players will receive a promotion, but here are several intriguing prospects who have a chance to get the call in September and how they could make a short- and/or long-term impact with their respective clubs.

Jose De Leon, RHP, Los Angeles Dodgers: Since a borderline disastrous outing July 25, in which De Leon didn't make it out of the second inning for Triple-A Oklahoma City, De Leon has been one of the best pitchers in minor league baseball. It's not smoke and mirrors, either; the right-hander touches the mid-90s with his fastball, and his excellent arm speed creates deception for his plus changeup. Add in a competent slider and the ability to not only throw strikes but hit his spots with all of his pitches, and we have a guy who is ready to pitch in the majors. With the Dodgers firmly entrenched in the playoff race, he could be a valuable part of their pitching staff down the stretch.
