Profiling the top international prospects and where they're likely to sign

The international scouts have had plenty of good players to watch in the past year; in this shot, they're scouting Cuban pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez, profiled below. Cliff Welch/Icon Sportswire

The new international amateur free-agent signing period begins Saturday, and below is our list of the top international prospects eligible to sign during what is called the J2 period, according to the J2 guidelines outlined by Major League Baseball. Most of the players below have been heavily attached to teams for months, which we note in the write-ups. (And let's just say the Padres have been busy on the international market, as have a few other teams.)

On to the top international prospects:

Kevin Maitan, SS
Venezuela
Teams linked: Braves, Nationals

Maitan is a physical shortstop who has been a top prospect since he was 14 years old because of the potential in his bat. He has surprising power for his age and a good feel to hit from both sides, although his right-handed swing looks more consistent. His hands are loose and quick, but the swing gets pretty long, and he could develop as Miguel Sano did, striking out often when young but developing better plate discipline as he grows because he's such a good hitter. He has no shot at remaining at shortstop in pro ball but has a plus arm, and he has a decent chance to stick at third base.

Atlanta has been known to have a deal in place with Maitan for over a year now, although the Nationals have been aggressive in trying to sign him, as well.
