Royals place outfielder Lorenzo Cain on 15-day disabled list

The Kansas City Royals placed center fielder Lorenzo Cain on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a left hamstring strain.

The Royals recalled outfielder Brett Eibner from Triple-A Omaha to take Cain's roster spot, and manager Ned Yost said he'd use a platoon of Jarrod Dyson and Paulo Orlando until Cain returns.

Cain was injured in an 8-4 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. He was trying to beat out an infield hit in the seventh inning, and an MRI revealed a Grade 1-plus strain.

"My legs had been feeling really good," Cain told reporters Wednesday. "I ended up touching the bag and then when I tried to slow down; that's when I felt it. It kind of shocked me at first, but it's part of the game."

"I'm happy it's not worse than it is. I'm going to do everything possible to rehab and make sure I'm ready to go."

He hopes to return after the All-Star break.

"That's the plan," Cain said. "It just depends how it feels. I'm very optimistic about the MRI that we saw. Hopefully, I'll be ready to go right after the All-Star break."

Cain, an All-Star last season, is batting .290 with eight home runs, 39 RBIs and six stolen bases.

This will be the 27-year-old Eibner's third stint with the Royals this season. He was batting .297 in 11 games with five doubles, a home run and seven RBIs with the Royals.
