Andrew Lambo has surgery for testicular cancer

Outfielder Andrew Lambo, who was on the Oakland Athletics' Opening Day roster and played in one game after being claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, is recovering after undergoing surgery last week for testicular cancer.

Lambo, 27, was experiencing discomfort while playing for Triple-A Nashville, was diagnosed and had the procedure at the Vanderbilt University Urology Clinic, the team said Tuesday.

Lambo, who has been placed on the seven-day disabled list, tweeted Tuesday night to thank fans for their support.

"I let Andrew know that his health is of the utmost importance to us and that the A's will assist him in any way possible through his treatment and recovery process," A's general manager David Forst said in a statement.

Lambo, who spent parts of three seasons with the Pirates before joining the A's, is hitting .255 with four homers and 30 RBIs for Nashville this season.

"He's a pretty gregarious guy and fits in well in the clubhouse," A's manager Bob Melvin told reporters Tuesday. "At some point in time, we figured we'd see him this year, but right now, what he's got going on is a lot more important. So we're keeping our fingers crossed, and our thoughts and prayers are with him."
