Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor started serving his suspension Friday for punching Toronto's Jose Bautista after the penalty was reduced from eight games to seven.
Odor was out of the lineup for Texas' 9-1 series-opening loss to Pittsburgh. He will be eligible to return June 4, when Texas is home against Seattle.
Former top Rangers prospect Jurickson Profar filled in for Odor at second base after getting called up from Triple-A Round Rock. Playing his first major league game since Sept. 27, 2013, Profar, 23, had a single in five at-bats while also taking Odor's leadoff spot.
The team also placed right-handed pitcher Shawn Tolleson on MLB's family medical emergency list. That leave is a minimum three days and a maximum seven days. Tolleson, who has 11 saves but lost his role as the Rangers closer after four blown saves, is going to be with his father, who is battling colon cancer. Tolleson is from the Dallas area.
Odor, 22, had appealed his suspension to MLB executive vice president John McHale on Tuesday.
Odor punched Bautista in the jaw after Bautista slid at Odor's legs in an attempt to break up a double play in the top of the eighth inning of the host Rangers' 7-6 win on May 15. Players from both teams rushed the field, and Odor shoved Bautista and then landed the punch. Bautista had reached base after being hit by a pitch from Matt Bush.
The league disciplined 14 players and staff for their actions in the brawl. Eight players were ejected from the game between two teams that met in last year's postseason, with six of the dismissals stemming from the brawl sparked by Odor's punch and the aftermath.
"I tend to live by the decision and move on," Texas manager Jeff Banister said. "I don't get caught up into thinking something's fair or not. We live with it and move on."
Bautista was suspended one game for his role in the incident. He was serving that Friday, when the penalty was upheld a day after his appeal was heard.
Bautista called the decision "unfair," and was equally critical of the decision to reduce Odor's suspension.
"I can't say that I agree with it,'' Bautista said. "He either has friends in high places or that organization does."
While saying after the incident that he had no regrets about what transpired, Odor has since said he respects Bautista and looks to move forward.
"I think it's over. It's in the past," Odor said through a translator on May 16.
The brawl happened in the final regular-season meeting between the two clubs. A feud had been simmering between the teams since last year's American League Division Series, during which Bautista demonstratively flipped his bat following a home run in Game 5.
Blue Jays manager John Gibbons has already served a three-game suspension for returning to the field after he was ejected. First-base coach Tim Leiper received a one-game ban for returning to the dugout after his ejection.
The only other Texas player suspended was shortstop Elvis Andrus, who has already served his one-game suspension.
Other players who received fines included Rangers pitchers Bush, Sam Dyson (aggressive actions) and A.J. Griffin (being on the field while on the DL); Rangers catcher Robinson Chirinos (being on the field while on the DL); and Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Pillar (aggressive actions).
