Athletics utility man Mark Canha has season-ending hip surgery

MLB, Oakland Athletics

SEATTLE -- Oakland Athletics utility player Mark Canha has had successful surgery on his left hip that will keep him out for the rest of the season.

Canha had the surgery at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado, the team announced Wednesday. Dr. Marc Philippon repaired issues that were causing a hip impingement and also performed a repair to the labrum. Canha is expected to return to Oakland on Monday to continue his rehabilitation.

Canha was placed on the disabled list May 10. He had appeared in just 16 games and was hitting .122 with three home runs and six RBIs. Canha had started games at five positions early in the season: first base, right field, left field, third base and designated hitter.

Canha appeared in 124 games last season and hit .254 with 16 homers and 70 RBIs.
