Yu Darvish pitches in game for first time since 2015 surgery

MLB, Texas Rangers

Texas Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish pitched two scoreless innings Sunday in his first rehab start since he underwent Tommy John surgery last year.

Darvish, pitching for Double-A Frisco against Corpus Christi, struck out two and allowed just one baserunner, via a walk, during his outing.

According to the Dallas Morning News, he threw 24 fastballs, averaged 94.3 mph and twice reached 97 mph on the radar gun.

It was his first time pitching in a game since Aug. 9, 2014 against the Astros in Houston.

"It's been a while since I pitched in a game situation,'' Darvish said through an interpreter, according to the Morning News. "I felt like I was pitching with the bases loaded in a big league game every pitch.''

Darvish departed the game to a standing ovation from the fans in attendance.

"I am glad the fans didn't forget me for not pitching in more than a year,'' Darvish said, according to the newspaper. "I appreciate that.''

Darvish could return to the Rangers' rotation in late May. According to the Morning News, he is expected to make four more rehab starts and will try to pitch one more inning in each outing.

Darvish had surgery last year after feeling tightness in his right triceps after pitching one inning of a spring training game on March 5, 2015.
