McCutchen has 3 homers through 6 innings vs. Rockies

MLB, Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers

DENVER -- Andrew McCutchen has hit three homers through six innings for the Pittsburgh Pirates against the Colorado Rockies.

Tuesday night marks the second time McCutchen has hit three homers in a game. The other time he accomplished the feat was Aug. 1, 2009, against Washington.

McCutchen hit solo shots in the first and second innings off starter Jorge De La Rosa, and then he lined a three-run homer to right off reliever Christian Bergman in the sixth. Entering the game, McCutchen was in a 3-for-23 funk on this road trip. But he quickly rediscovered his swing and now has five homers this season.

The major league record for homers in a game is four, done 16 times, according to STATS. Josh Hamilton last did it in 2012.

David Freese and Starling Marte also have homered for the Pirates. Pittsburgh leads 8-4 after six innings.

A previous version of this story erroneously said that 14 players had hit four homers in a game.
