Marlins' Mike Dunn to start season on DL

MLB, Miami Marlins

Miami Marlins left-handed reliever Mike Dunn will begin the season on the disabled list with a forearm strain, the team announced Sunday.

It is the first time Dunn has been placed on the disabled list in his career.

The move Sunday was retroactive to March 25. Dunn underwent an MRI which was negative, and the Marlins don't believe his injury is serious, president of baseball operations Michael Hill said Sunday.

He is 14 appearances away from tying the franchise record for appearances, held by Braden Looper, who was a Marlins reliever from 1999 until 2003.

Dunn, 30, has more than 70 appearances in each of the past three seasons and four of his five with the Marlins. He made 72 appearances last season, finishing with a 2-5 record and a 4.50 ERA.

He was acquired by the Marlins as part of the 2010 trade that sent Dan Uggla to the Atlanta Braves.

In other moves Sunday, Miami designated left-hander Brad Hand and outfielder Cole Gillespie for assignment. If Hand is not claimed, the Marlins could outright him to Triple-A New Orleans.

Left-handers Craig Breslow and Chris Narveson and right-hander Dustin McGowan made the roster and will be in the bullpen on opening night Tuesday against Detroit.

The Marlins placed left-hander Raudel Lazo on the 15-day disabled list and right-hander Carter Capps on the 60-day disabled list. Capps is out for the season following elbow surgery.
