Mariners re-sign Franklin Gutierrez to 1-year contract

MLB, Seattle Mariners

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners have re-signed outfielder Franklin Gutierrez to a one-year contract after a surprisingly productive 2015 season.

The terms of the deal, which was announced Wednesday, guarantee him $1.5 million. He can make $4.25 million in performance bonuses based on plate appearances, including $500,000 bonuses for 200 plate appearances and each additional 50 through 500. He would also get $750,000 for 550 plate appearances. It's a major league contract for the 2016 season after Gutierrez was able to stay healthy and contribute, hitting .292 with 15 home runs and 35 RBI in 59 games with the Mariners.

Once a Gold Glove-winning center fielder with Seattle, Gutierrez was slowed by injuries and stomach issues that only allowed him to play 173 games from 2011-13, with six stints on the disabled list.

Gutierrez sat out 2014 but last season showed what he can do when healthy. He had a .354 on-base percentage and .974 OPS. Gutierrez started with Seattle on a minor league contract and played in 48 games at Triple-A Tacoma before being called up.
