Sonny Gray, felled by left hip soreness, won't pitch again for A's in 2015

MLB, Oakland Athletics

Oakland Athletics ace Sonny Gray has been scratched from his Wednesday start because of soreness in his left hip, meaning he will not pitch again in his breakout 2015 season.

Gray pitched the A's past the San Francisco Giants on Sept. 25 but did so while being hampered by the hip. He made it through six innings in his final start and was eventually credited with a win.

An AL Cy Young candidate, Gray, 25, starred this season with a 2.73 ERA and 14-7 record for the American League's worst team.

Barry Zito, who was recalled from Triple-A to start on Sept. 26 against retiring former teammate Tim Hudson, will take the ball in Gray's place for Oakland.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
