Huston Street likely out for regular season; hopeful to pitch in playoffs

MLB, Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels will probably be without their closer as they push to make the playoffs in the final week of the regular season.

Right-hander Huston Street, the American League leader in saves with 40, said Sunday that results of an MRI exam for his injured groin were "very positive," although he is unlikely to pitch again in the regular season. Street said he hopes to return later in October if the Angels make the postseason.

Street addressed his injury on Twitter on Saturday night.

Street was injured and had to be helped off the field in the ninth inning of the Angels' win over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night. He faced two batters in the ninth before doubling over in pain when he threw a pitch that led to Franklin Gutierrez's groundout. After falling to the grass, Street tried to get up and walk off the field on his own but wasn't able to.

Losing Street would be another huge blow to the Angels' bullpen, which is already without setup man Joe Smith, who sprained his ankle earlier this week.

"It's tough to lose Joe and Huston," Scioscia told reporters after Saturday's game. "We're going to do it by committee and hopefully hold leads."

"Late in the year you want everybody to be healthy, but we'll persevere," third baseman David Freese said, according to the Orange County Register. "Hopefully, it's not too serious. We'll make do."

With six games to go after Sunday's 3-2 win, Los Angeles is three games behind the Texas Rangers in the AL West and a half-game behind the Houston Astros for the second AL wild-card spot. The Astros defeated the Rangers 4-2 on Sunday.
