Starter Mat Latos, acquired July 30, designated for assignment by Dodgers

MLB, Los Angeles Dodgers

Pitcher Mat Latos will not finish the season with the Los Angeles Dodgers after the team designated him for assignment on Thursday.

Latos, a right-hander who arrived from the Miami Marlins as part of a 13-player trade on July 30, has struggled in almost all of his appearances since the trade. He finishes his time with the Dodgers with an 0-3 record, 6.66 ERA and 31 hits allowed in 24â…“ innings.

The Dodgers' front office was unhappy after Latos was critical of manager Don Mattingly's "short leash" in San Diego on Sept. 3.

"It's hard to get into a rhythm," Latos said at that time. "I kind of settled in, put up two zeros up on the board, found my release point. By the time I do that, I'm already out of the game."

Latos is set for free agency this offseason after signing a one-year deal with the Marlins worth $9.5 million. The Dodgers assumed the remainder of Latos' salary when they acquired him.

Latos' final appearance as a Dodger came in Tuesday's 16-inning loss to the Colorado Rockies. He entered as a reliever in the 16th inning and allowed the winning home run.

On Aug. 18, the Dodgers moved Latos to the bullpen as part of a plan to maximize usage of Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke for a short stretch of the schedule.

The team also reinstated right-hander Carlos Frias from the 60-day disabled list.

Frias, 25, last pitched in a big league game on June 30 before being placed on the DL with right lower back tightness. He is 5-5 with a 4.39 ERA in 14 games, including 12 starts, with the Dodgers this season.

Frias had a 4.73 ERA in seven injury rehabilitation games with Class A Rancho Cucamonga and Triple-A Oklahoma City.

He last pitched with Oklahoma City against Memphis on Sept. 6, when he threw two scoreless innings of relief.
