CLEVELAND -- Carlos Carrasco's sore right shoulder could force the Indians to place him on the disabled list.
Carrrasco, who leads Cleveland in wins and has been the club's most consistent starter this season, will be examined Tuesday night, and then the Indians will decide whether to put him on the 15-day disabled list or push his start back a few days.
Manager Terry Francona said Carrasco has been bothered by soreness, which worsened following a recent start in New York. Francona said Carrasco underwent an MRI, which didn't reveal any damage.
"Sometimes when you give MRIs to pitchers you have to be a little bit careful because anybody throwing a baseball is going to have something wrong with him, but his was very clean and we were thrilled," Francona said before the Indians opened a two-game series with Milwaukee. "Regardless of whether it's going to be two days, three days or a couple weeks, he's going to be fine."
In his last five starts, Carrasco is 2-1 with two no-decisions and has only allowed six earned runs in 39 2/3 innings.
Francona said Carrasco may need a cortisone shot and could be placed on the DL as early as Wednesday. The 28-year-old had Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery in 2011 and sat out the following season.
Francona said Carrasco looked good while throwing a bullpen session on Monday, but the team wants to be careful with one of its top arms.
Carrasco, who spent last season pitching in the rotation and relief, is 12-9 with a 3.53 ERA in 25 starts. He was scheduled to start Wednesday against the Brewers, but he'll be replaced by Cody Anderson, who has been on the DL with a strained left oblique. Anderson is 2-3 with a 4.31 ERA in eight starts.
Anderson was scheduled to make a rehab start in the minors on Monday, but the Indians canceled the outing because of Carrasco's situation.
