Drew Smyly to start Sunday for Rays after rehabbing torn labrum

MLB, Tampa Bay Rays

Drew Smyly, out since May 5 with a torn labrum, is scheduled to return for a start Sunday against the Texas Rangers.

Smyly, who was the centerpiece of the Tampa Bay Rays' haul in their 2014 deadline trade of David Price to the Detroit Tigers, threw a bullpen session Friday with no problems.

In May, the Rays announced Smyly would miss the rest of the season and transferred Smyly to the 60-day disabled list. A week later, Rays manager Kevin Cash backtracked on the original prognosis to say Smyly had a chance to pitch again this season. Smyly opted for rest instead of surgery, which would have ended his season.

Smyly, 26, came back from a spring bout of tendinitis to make three starts early this season, but he began complaining of tightness in his arm during a start at Boston on May 5. He is 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA.
