TRADE BAIT
David Price and Jeff Samardzija, two of the top pitchers potentially available before Friday's trade deadline, could be making their final starts with their current teams. Price pitches for the Tigers at Tampa Bay. Samardzija is on the mound for the White Sox in Boston. Both can become free agents after this season.
FILL THE VOID
Veteran outfielder Shane Victorino joins the Angels for the opener of an important three-game series at Houston. Los Angeles leads the AL West by one game over the Astros. Victorino, a World Series champion with the Phillies and Red Sox, was obtained Monday in a trade with Boston. He mostly played right field for the Red Sox, but seems likely to play left against left-handers with the Angels. Los Angeles left fielders are collectively batting .212 with five homers.
SECOND LOOK
Mets manager Terry Collins has a new weapon in the bullpen after two-time All-Star Tyler Clippard was acquired Monday in a trade with Oakland. But first, New York will send rookie starter Noah Syndergaard to the mound against Padres right-hander James Shields. Syndergaard is 4-1 with a 1.74 ERA in six starts at Citi Field, but allowed a career-high seven runs and 10 hits in four innings of a 7-2 loss at San Diego on June 2. He also struck out 10 and walked none in that game.
MARQUEE MATCHUP
Jordan Zimmermann (8-5, 3.30 ERA) pitches for Washington when the NL East leaders visit Miami. Marlins ace Jose Fernandez (3-0, 2.77) makes his fifth start since returning from Tommy John surgery.
FAMILIAR FACE
Dodgers lefty Brett Anderson (5-5, 3.33 ERA) is scheduled to face his former team in an interleague home game against Oakland ace Sonny Gray (10-4, 2.30). Anderson, who leads the majors in groundball percentage (67.1 percent), exited his most recent outing last Tuesday at Atlanta in the third inning with an irritated left Achilles tendon. He went 26-29 with a 3.81 ERA for the Athletics from 2009-13.
FINALLY HEALTHY
Brewers right-hander Wily Peralta (1-5) comes off the disabled list to make his first start since May 22 when he faces the Giants. Peralta has been sidelined with a strained left oblique.
