Pablo Sandoval sprains ankle fielding ground ball, is day-to-day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Boston third baseman Pablo Sandoval and catcher Blake Swihart are day-to-day after getting hurt in Saturday's 7-4 loss to Kansas City.

Sandoval, who was benched for Thursday's game after getting caught on Instagram during a game, left in the bottom of the fifth inning with a left ankle sprain. He did not speak to reporters after the game and had a walking boot on his left foot.

Swihart sprained his left foot sliding into third base on what turned out to be the third out in the top of the fifth inning.

"We'll check them when they come in in the morning," manager John Farrell said. "Undetermined right now if we're going to need to make a [roster] move."

Both underwent X-rays, which came up negative, at the stadium.

Sandoval was hurt on a throw. With the Red Sox leading 4-3 and the potential tying run at third, Sandoval stopped Lorenzo Cain's hot smash near the bag, tried to tag out the runner, got up awkwardly, double-clutched and threw wildly to first, allowing the runner to score and tie the game at 4. He walked off without help and was replaced by Travis Shaw.

Sandoval went 0-for-3, ending his nine-game hitting streak. Swihart had collected two hits for the second night in a row.

The Red Sox also lost designated hitter David Ortiz, who was ejected in the seventh inning by plate umpire Bruce Dreckman.
