St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday set a franchise record Wednesday by reaching base safely for the 43rd consecutive game to start the season -- the longest streak in the National League since 1914.
Holliday singled in the fifth inning of the Cardinals' 4-3 victory against Arizona to pass the team record set by Albert Pujols in 2008. Derek Jeter set the major league record with 53 in a row in 1999.
"Yeah, that's cool," Holliday told reporters after the game. "A lot of players have played in the National League. That's pretty good, I guess."
He is hitting .320 with 24 RBIs this season.
"I think any time with the history of this organization when you're doing something that hasn't been done before it makes you stop and think about the great names that walked through the halls of being a St. Louis Cardinal," manager Mike Matheny told reporters after the game. "It's a great compliment to the player that he is and also the amount of work he's put in to have the start that he's had."
Said reliever Mitch Harris to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "It seems like every day he gets on base, so to us, we were like, 'Oh, OK, he got on again.'"
