KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kendrys Morales hit two home runs and had five RBIs, Chris Young gave up six hits in six innings and the Kansas City Royals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0 Friday night.
The Royals improved to 27-14, the best record in the majors, while the Cardinals dropped to 27-15, best in the National League.
Morales, who leads the American League with 37 RBIs, hit a three-run homer with two out in the first. He homered again in the third with Lorenzo Cain aboard for his 13th multihomer game. The five RBIs matched a Royals' season high.
Young (4-0) got 13 flyball outs and struck out two. In Young's four starts, he has allowed one earned run in 22 1-3 innings (0.40 ERA).
Royals starters Young, Edinson Volquez, Yordano Ventura and Jeremy Guthrie have combined to throw 26 shutout innings while allowing 18 hits in the past four games.
NATIONALS 2, PHILLIES 1
WASHINGTON -- Bryce Harper hit another home run and Max Scherzer had another dominant outing to help Washington beat Philadelphia for its sixth straight win.
Harper's 11th homer in 14 games tied the score 1-1 in the second inning and Ian Desmond's RBI double drove in Scherzer with the go-ahead run in the sixth. The NL East-leading Nationals are 18-4 since April 28.
Scherzer (5-3) allowed four hits over eight innings with six strikeouts and one walk. He retired 19 of 22 after Odubel Franco's RBI double in the second. Over his last four starts, Scherzer is 4-0 with 33 strikeouts.
Drew Storen got the last three outs for his 13th save. He allowed two singles in the ninth, but got the final two batters.
Sean O'Sullivan (1-3) allowed two runs and five hits in six innings.
PIRATES 4, METS 1
PITTSBURGH -- Gerrit Cole struck out 10 over 8 1-3 dominant innings to out-duel New York rookie Noah Syndergaard and lift Pittsburgh to the win.
Cole (6-2) gave up just six hits -- all singles -- and walked one to lower his ERA to 2.05 as the Pirates won for just the second time in their last eight games. Mark Melancon got the final two outs for his 10th save.
Chris Stewart had two hits and an RBI for Pittsburgh. Jung Ho Kang, Pedro Alvarez and Gregory Polanco also drove in runs as the Pirates dropped New York to just 7-13 on the road.
Syndergaard (1-2) struck out the first four batters he faced and fanned five in all but surrendered four runs, three earned, in six innings. Juan Lagares reached base twice and scored New York's only run on a wild pitch.
RANGERS 10, YANKEES 9
NEW YORK -- Prince Fielder launched two long homers, drove in four runs and helped Texas hold off New York for its third straight win.
Quickly down 7-0 and still trailing 10-5, New York rallied in the eighth inning on pinch-hitter Garrett Jones' three-run homer.
Journeyman Ross Ohlendorf took over to begin the ninth, gave up a one-out home run to Mark Teixeira and walked Chase Headley with two outs. Stephen Drew followed with a comebacker that glanced off Ohlendorf, and second baseman Tommy Field swooped in to get the out at first.
Ohlendorf wound up with his first career save. Shawn Tolleson earned saves the previous two days for Texas and didn't warm up.
Back home after a 2-7 trip, the Yankees watched Fielder's three-run shot sail into the second deck during a seven-run burst in the third inning.
ANGELS 12, RED SOX 5
BOSTON -- Chris Iannetta and Erick Aybar homered in a nine-run fifth inning, and Albert Pujols also hit a home run to lead Los Angeles to a victory over Boston.
Mike Trout had a pair of hits -- both in the fifth inning, when the Angels sent 13 batters to the plate and took an 11-3 lead. Boston loaded the bases in the seventh with nobody out and two runs already in, but Jose Alvarez struck out David Oritz and then got an inning-ending double play.
Garrett Richards (4-2) allowed five runs on nine hits and two walks, striking out one in six-plus innings.
Rick Porcello (4-3) allowed seven runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out four.
MARINERS 4, BLUE JAYS 3
TORONTO -- Nelson Cruz hit his big league-leading 17th home run, Felix Hernandez became the first seven-game winner in the majors and Seattle beat Toronto.
Hernandez (7-1) bounced back from his first loss of the season to pitch seven sharp innings, lowering his ERA to 2.19.
Toronto lost for the eighth time in 10 games and fell to 2-9 in one-run games.
Edwin Encarnacion's two-out homer in the first was the only blemish for Hernandez, who gave up four hits and walked two.
Hernandez struck out eight, moving past Catfish Hunter and into a tie with Orel Hershiser for 70th on baseball's career strikeout list.
Collin McHugh (5-2) lost for just the second time in his last 14 decisions.
TIGERS 6, ASTROS 2
DETROIT -- J.D. Martinez hit a three-run homer and Alfredo Simon pitched seven strong innings as Detroit beat Houston.
Simon (5-2) got the win, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and a walk in seven innings. Simon, who struck out five, used his slow curve effectively, throwing it so softly once that it didn't register on the radar gun.
Joba Chamberlain pitched a perfect eighth with a one-run lead, and Tom Gorzelanny finished after Detroit scored three times in the bottom of the inning.
Collin McHugh (5-2) lost for just the second time in his last 14 decisions, giving up three runs on nine hits and a walk in seven innings. McHugh's two losses have been in his last three starts after he had gone unbeaten in 16 outings dating back to last August.
RAYS 5, ATHELTICS 2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Evan Longoria hit a three-run homer off Scott Kazmir and Tampa Bay powered past Oakland.
Steven Souza Jr. and Tim Beckham added solo home runs for the Rays, who won for the fourth time in five games and remained in first place in the AL East.
Rays starter Chris Archer (5-4) and five relievers gave up nine hits, and Tampa held an opponent to two runs or less for the 22nd time in 43 games. Archer gave up six hits, struck out eight and walked four in 5 1/3 innings for Tampa Bay. Archer has allowed one run or less in six of his 10 starts.
Brad Boxberger got the final out for his 13th save.
Kazmir (2-3) gave up two earned runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings for the A's, who lost their fourth straight and 14th of 16.
INDIANS 7, REDS 3
CLEVELAND -- Brandon Moss homered and drove in three runs, leading Cleveland to a win over Cincinnati.
Carlos Carrasco (5-4) allowed two runs in six innings, sending the Reds to their season-high sixth straight loss.
Moss homered in the third to break a 2-all tie and added a two-run double in the fourth as Cleveland won for the sixth time in eight games.
Mike Leake (2-3) stumbled through four innings, allowing five runs, seven hits and five walks.
Cincinnati has been outscored 47-16 during its losing streak and dropped to a season-worst five games below .500 at 18-23.
WHITE SOX 3, TWINS 2
CHICAGO -- Jeff Samardzija pitched three-hit ball over eight innings, and Chicago beat Minnesota.
Samardzija (4-2) settled down after a two-run first, retiring 17 straight at one point.
J.B. Shuck delivered the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth, and the White Sox opened the weekend series on a winning note after dropping three in a row.
Samardzija struck out a season-high nine while walking one. He was nearly untouchable after the first, when Minnesota's Joe Mauer doubled in a run and scored.
He walked Eduardo Escobar leading off the second, then retired 17 in a row before Escobar singled with two out in the seventh. Samardzija then struck out Eddie Rosario and pounded his glove as he walked toward the dugout.
BREWERS 11, BRAVES 0
ATLANTA -- Ryan Braun homered and drove in four runs and four Milwaukee pitchers combined to hold Atlanta to three hits.
On a day that began with Major League Baseball suspending reliever Will Smith eight games for using a foreign substance to doctor his pitches, Milwaukee wasted little time beating up on Braves starter Eric Stults (1-5).
The win was the Brewers' largest margin of victory since Sept. 22, 2010, when they beat Cincinnati 13-1.
Braun hit his 11th homer, a two-run shot, to make it 2-0 in the first. The 2011 NL MVP added a two-run double off Trevor Cahill in the fourth and now has 29 RBIs in his last 23 games.
Michael Blazek (4-1) earned the victory in relief by allowing one hit and striking out three in three innings.
ORIOLES 8, MARLINS 5
MIAMI -- Miami right-handers Henderson Alvarez and Mat Latos have been placed on the 15-day disabled list, the latest blow for a team that has lost eight consecutive games.
Alvarez (0-4) pitched five-plus innings and took the defeat in the loss to Baltimore. He went on the DL with a recurrence of right shoulder inflammation, which sidelined him for a month earlier this year.
Latos, who is 1-4 with a 6.12 ERA, went on the DL with left knee inflammation. He underwent surgery on the knee in 2014, when he was limited to 16 starts with Cincinnati.
Miami native Manny Machado had two hits and three RBIs for Baltimore. Caleb Joseph contributed three hits, including a two-run single, and Jimmy Paredes also had three hits to hike his average to .353.
The Orioles overcame a 3-0 deficit for their fourth victory in the past five games.
