Nats offering fans chance to stretch in the outfield on Yoga Night

In Washington, they're hoping those who love the Nats also love their mats.

The Washington Nationals are the latest team to host a Yoga Night at their ballpark, selling a special ticket that includes a 45-minute yoga instruction in the outfield after their game against the Chicago Cubs on June 7. The ticket also includes a red mat with the Nats logo on it.

"We are surrounded by a very active community," said Valerie Camillo, the team's chief revenue officer. "People are very into fitness, into green parks, and we want to tap into that."

A recent report by the American College of Sports Medicine, released earlier this week, said that Washington, D.C., is the fittest city in America. In Washington, 95 percent of the population can find a park within a 10-minute walk from their homes.

Camillo said she first considered doing something with yoga after she arranged for the team's president mascots to attempt to do exercises at an event at the Washington Monument last year.

The team established a partnership with a local yoga studio to secure an instructor for the event and has been advertising the event at other yoga businesses around town.

While Yoga Night is meant to bring more women to the ballpark, Camillo said the team's data shows that more than 40 percent of its crowd at an average game is female, which is higher than the league average.

Camillo said she expects to sell about 500 yoga tickets, which cost $55 for an outfield seat and $85 for an infield box seat. The team sent an email to fans Thursday that said, "Sometimes the seventh inning isn't enough time to stretch."

First pitch on June 7 is scheduled for 4:05 p.m., which means the yoga session would take place toward sunset.

More than 25 million Americans participated in yoga in 2014, and the number of participants in the U.S. has grown by 6 percent over the past five years, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association.

Three teams have previously hosted yoga events at ballparks in partnership with yoga apparel brand Lululemon: the Boston Red Sox (Fenway Park), Cubs (Wrigley Field) and Pittsburgh Pirates (PNC Park).
