Mets 2B Dilson Herrera DL-bound after fracturing fingertip in fielding drills

NEW YORK -- New York Mets second baseman Dilson Herrera fractured the tip of his middle finger during fielding drills Friday, prior to the New York Mets' 7-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Herrera was pulled from the Mets' lineup and will be placed on the disabled list.

Eric Campbell will return from Triple-A Las Vegas to take Herrera's roster spot. Manager Terry Collins said Daniel Murphy will move back to second base, with Campbell handling third base.

The Mets initially thought it was just a fingernail issue.

"We shook our heads when they came to us and told us during the game that his finger was broken," Collins said. "I just said, 'Of course it is. The way things have gone for us; we certainly couldn't have just a fingernail issue, we've gotta break his finger.'"

The 21-year-old Herrera was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on May 1, and was batting .235 with one home run and three RBIs.

"We were just doing the routine daily work of double-play ground balls," Herrera said, via a translator. "It was a throw to me, and I stuck my finger I think a little too deep [in the glove] or a little too close and got hit on the tip."

Ruben Tejada started at second base in Herrera's place on Friday. He went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.

The Mets already have third baseman David Wright and catcher Travis d'Arnaud on the DL.

Catcher Kevin Plawecki, meanwhile, was also unavailable Friday, Collins revealed after the game.

"Doctors examined him, he had a sinus infection, he had dizzy spells, so he couldn't play tonight [either]," Collins said.
