BALTIMORE -- In what was believed to be the first major league game played without fans in attendance, Chris Davis hit a three-run homer in a six-run first inning Wednesday and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Chicago White Sox 8-2.
The gates at Camden Yards were locked because of concern for fan safety following recent rioting in Baltimore after a 25-year-old black man died in police custody. The unusual decision to play the game was made because it was the best time to fill out the schedule for both teams.
Both teams lined up for the national anthem, music was piped in between innings and the seventh inning streak was noted with the traditional John Denver song.
In a crisp 2 hours, 3 minutes, Baltimore won its third straight since snapping a five-game losing streak.
Ubaldo Jimenez (2-1) continued his rebound from last season's struggles, allowing two runs -- one earned -- on three hits with six strikeouts and just one walk over seven innings for the Orioles. Manny Machado hit his fourth home run among his three hits and Caleb Joseph had two RBIs.
Chicago's Jeff Samardzija (1-2) allowed a season-high eight runs -- seven earned -- on 10 hits, including two homers, over just five innings. Entering the game, he had not allowed a run over his previous 10 innings.
RAYS 3, YANKEES 2, 13 INNINGS
NEW YORK -- James Loney hit a go-ahead infield single in the 13th inning, and Tampa Bay avoided a three-game sweep.
New York's Alex Rodriguez remained one home run shy of tying Willie Mays for fourth place at 660. A-Rod went 0 for 6 with four strikeouts and hit into a game-ending double play. He is 5 for 36 (.139) since April 17, when he homered twice at Tampa Bay. It was just his fifth four-strikeout game, first since 2008.
Left-hander Chasen Shreve (1-1), New York's seventh pitcher, entered in the 12th and walked Steven Sousa with one out in the 13th. Asdrubal Cabrera advanced the runner with a groundout, and Evan Longoria was intentionally walked to bring up the left-handed-hitting Loney.
ASTROS 7, PADRES 2
SAN DIEGO -- Dallas Keuchel held San Diego to three hits in eight innings and Colby Rasmus hit a two-run homer to power Houston to its sixth straight win.
The AL West-leading Astros swept the Padres for the first time since May 8-10, 2009. First-year manager A.J. Hinch had worked in San Diego's front office from September 2010 until just after A.J. Preller was hired as general manager in early August.
Houston outscored San Diego 30-9 and outhit the Padres 36-19.
The Astros head home after an 8-1 West Coast trip gave them the best road record in the majors, 10-2.
The Padres have lost seven of eight, including five of six on this homestand.
TIGERS 10, TWINS 7
MINNEAPOLIS -- Miguel Cabrera hit two of Detroit's four home runs during a powerful rally that led Detroit past Minnesota.
Rookie James McCann's first career homer came on an inside-the-park, two-run drive that tied it in the sixth inning for the Tigers, who trailed Phil Hughes and the Twins 7-3 after a seven-run burst against Shane Greene over the fourth and the fifth.
Hughes finished five innings before being removed because of a mild left hip flexor strain, and Cabrera and J.D. Martinez hit home runs in the sixth off Tim Stauffer. Aaron Thompson relieved with two out and one on, when McCann's deep fly eluded center fielder Jordan Schafer and ricocheted sharply along the warning track.
By the time Oswaldo Arcia retreated from shallow right field to retrieve the ball, McCann was rounding third.
Tom Gorzelanny (1-1) got four outs for the victory, and Joakim Soria notched his ninth save in as many attempts with a scoreless final inning. Casey Fien (1-2) was the loser.
BREWERS 8, REDS 3
CINCINNATI -- Ryan Braun hit his fourth career grand slam and a solo homer to help Milwaukee past Cincinnati.
The Brewers ended a seven-game losing streak on the road and improved to 5-17 overall, the worst start by a National League team since the 1997 Cubs went 4-18.
All but one of the 11 combined runs came off homers. The NL Central rivals combined for 12 homers in the final two games, 10 of them solos.
Braun, Adam Lind and Khris Davis had solo shots off Michael Lorenzen (0-1), a 23-year-old making his major league debut. The Reds called him up from Triple-A to fill in for Homer Bailey, who is out indefinitely with a damaged ligament in his pitching elbow.
MARLINS 7, METS 3
MIAMI -- Giancarlo Stanton homered and drove in three runs, Ichiro Suzuki added a three-run homer in the eighth to blow the game open.
Dee Gordon had two hits and his sacrifice fly in the seventh put the Marlins ahead for good, adding to a night where he raised his average to .409. Ichiro's first home run since July 25 -- his second in his last 487 at-bats -- capped the scoring as Miami took two out of three from the NL East leaders.
Sam Dyson (1-0) worked two perfect innings of relief after starter Mat Latos left in the fifth with a left hamstring strain.
Colon (4-1) failed in his bid to be the majors' first five-game winner in 2015, allowing nine hits and four runs in 6 2-3 innings.
CARDINALS 5, PHILLIES 2
ST. LOUIS -- Peter Bourjos hit a game-tying RBI triple, then scored the go-ahead run by beating the throw home on an infield tapper to fuel a four-run fifth inning.
Carlos Martinez (3-0) allowed two runs in six innings and Matt Adams doubled twice with an RBI.
Ryan Howard hit his 20th career homer against St. Louis, 11 coming in his hometown, and Odubel Herrera had two hits and an RBI. Aaron Harang (2-2) surrendered five runs in six innings, ending a career-best run of eight consecutive quality starts dating to last September.
Bourjos entered 7 for 15 against Harang with a homer and four RBIs, no doubt factoring into his second start considering he was just 1 for 10 on the season.
MARINERS 5, RANGERS 2
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Logan Morrison had a tiebreaking, two-run double to back Felix Hernandez and lead the Seattle Mariners.
With the score tied 2-2 and the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Morrison hit a ground ball past first base against Texas starter Wandy Rodriguez (0-1). Morrison finished 4 for 5, including two hits against Rodriguez to improve to 7 for 14 in his career against the left-hander.
Hernandez allowed five hits, two runs and one walk in 6 2-3 innings to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2009.
Fernando Rodney pitched a perfect ninth inning for his seventh save in eight opportunities.
PIRATES 8, CUBS 1
CHICAGO -- Gerrit Cole allowed three hits over six innings, Andrew McCutchen had a two-run triple and the Pittsburgh Pirates salvaged the finale of the three-game series and snapped the Chicago Cubs' four-game winning streak.
McCutchen, who went 2 for 5, recorded the 1,00th hit of his career with an eighth-inning single.
Starling Marte and Jung Ho Kang had two RBIs each for the Pirates, with Jordy Mercer driving in a run.
Cole (4-0) allowed an unearned run in six innings, striking out eight and lowering his ERA to 1.76. The right-hander is 6-0 in six career starts against the Cubs.
Miguel Montero went 3 for 4 and drove in Chicago's lone run.
Chicago's Kyle Hendricks (0-1) allowed two runs and five hits in five innings.
INDIANS 7, ROYALS 5
CLEVELAND -- Jason Kipnis homered and drove in four runs to help the Cleveland Indians snap a four-game losing streak.
Kipnis hit a three-run home run -- his first since July 31 of last season -- in the third and then capped another three-run rally in the sixth with an RBI grounder. Michael Bourn's double gave Cleveland the lead.
Danny Salazar (3-0) allowed four runs in six innings.
Kansas City shortstop Alcides Escobar suffered a bruised left cheek after being hit in the head by a pitch from Salazar in the fifth inning. The ball struck Escobar on the left side of the helmet and he was on the ground for several moments. He walked off the field with help from two Royals trainers.
Yordano Ventura (2-2) allowed five runs in 5 1-3 innings.
RED SOX 4, BLUE JAYS 1
BOSTON -- Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run homer and Rick Porcello held Toronto to one run over seven innings.
David Ortiz and Mookie Betts had RBI singles for the Red Sox, who took the three-game series after losing their previous two.
Porcello (2-2) held the Blue Jays down one night after they put up 17 hits in an 11-8 win. He allowed two hits, struck out six and walked two in his best effort since joining the Red Sox.
R.A. Dickey (0-3) allowed four runs and nine hits, striking out four without walking a batter in seven innings. He was 4-0 against Boston last season.
Koji Uehara struck out all three batters in the ninth for his fourth save.
NATIONALS 13, BRAVES 4
ATLANTA -- Jordan Zimmermann won for the first time in four starts and hit a three-run single to help the Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves.
Denard Span, who had five hits the previous night, added a three-run homer in the ninth. The Nationals banged out 15 hits again, giving them 30 hits and 26 runs scored over the last two games.
Zimmermann, who had just 12 RBIs in 264 career at-bats coming in, had a bases-loaded single in the four-run fourth inning to give Washington the lead for good. On the mound, Zimmermann (2-2) gave up eight hits, one walk and four runs -- three earned -- with seven strikeouts in seven innings.
Washington has won two straight after dropping six in a row. Atlanta has lost seven of nine.
Braves starter Alex Wood (1-1) allowed six hits and five runs, striking out eight in five innings.
