Red Sox 3B Pablo Sandoval leaves game with sore neck

MLB, Boston Red Sox

BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval was removed from Monday night's 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in the top of the sixth inning with neck soreness.

The origin of the injury came in the fourth inning when Sandoval laid out to make a diving catch on a Dalton Pompey bunt pop-up. Sandoval suffered whiplash on the play but said he should be able to play tomorrow.

"Yeah. I'll be fine for tomorrow," Sandoval said after the game. "Sore. But it's part of the game. Taking one for the team."

In the bottom of the fourth, Sandoval hit a full-count solo home run, his first homer at Fenway Park.

Sandoval also had a two-run single in the first inning, giving him three RBI on the evening before being removed.

As a result of the injury, Brock Holt moved from right field to third base, Daniel Nava moved from first base to right field and Allen Craig came in to play first.

"On the diving bunt play there was a little bit of a whiplash, type of movement, injury type of thing," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "He started to tighten up as the game went along. We're hopeful he will be ready to go tomorrow. We'll check him when he comes in."
