Rays' Drew Smyly (shoulder tendinitis) to rejoin rotation Friday

MLB, Tampa Bay Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Drew Smyly is set to rejoin the rotation.

Smyly, who hasn't pitched this season after being sidelined by left shoulder tendinitis during spring training, is scheduled to face Toronto on Friday night.

"I'm excited to get the season going for myself," Smyly said Wednesday. "I'm ready. I'm just anxious to get out there."

Smyly was obtained from Detroit as part of a three-team trade July 31 that sent Rays ace David Price to the Tigers. Smyly went 3-1 with a 1.70 ERA in seven starts for Tampa Bay.

The Rays made a series of roster moves Wednesday.

Infielder Ryan Brett, who hurt his left shoulder diving back to first on a pick-off play Tuesday night, was placed on the 15-day disabled list and infielder Jake Elmore had his contract purchased from Triple-A Durham.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Elmore, left-hander Jeff Beliveau was transferred from the 15- to the 60-day DL.

Beliveau will have surgery Thursday to repair a torn left labrum and will miss the remainder of the season.

"Very frustrating for us, for him," manager Kevin Cash said. "Kind of something he's been dealing with throughout the course of spring. He kind of admitted that he never really felt quite right in spring training and throughout the early part of the season."
