ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tuesday night's 1-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox was frustrating for the Tampa Bays, but especially for Ryan Brett.
The rookie second baseman left his first major league start in the third inning with a shoulder injury after committing a throwing error that brought in the only run.
"It's frustrating. It's my first start," said Brett, who dislocated his shoulder while diving back to first base on a pickoff. "I would have liked to be out there, trying to help my team win. But right now my focus is on getting back on the field."
Wade Miley and four relievers combined on a four-hitter and the Red Sox took advantage of the error to beat Chris Archer.
Miley (1-1) gave up three hits, four walks and had three strikeouts over 5 2-3 innings.
It was Brett who delivered the Rays' first hit leading off the third, but Miley picked him off.
"I landed really awkwardly on it," Brett said.
He left the game immediately and his arm was in a sling afterward.
Brett hopes to avoid the disabled list, which is already occupied by 10 Rays.
"There is some head-scratching going on, like: Is this really happening?" said Rays manager Kevin Cash. "You feel bad for Ryan Brett. Just gets up here, he's had some good at-bats, and then a situation like that happens."
Alexi Ogando, Robbie Ross Jr., and Junichi Tazawa combined to retire seven straight before Koji Uehara allowed a leadoff single in the ninth before finishing for his second save.
Archer (2-2) allowed one unearned run and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings for the Rays, who have lost the first four games of a nine-game homestand. He struck out nine and walked one.
Archer had his scoreless streak end at 16 innings when Brett's throw on a potential inning-ending double play skipped past first baseman Logan Forsythe and allowed Ryan Hanigan to score.
"He was really upset about not turning that double play, but we all make mistakes, dude, and that's how you learn, that's how you grow," Archer said. "And honestly I don't even think it was a mistake; Mookie (Betts) put a good slide on him."
Boston designated hitter David Ortiz played after appealing a one-game suspension for making contact with umpire John Tumpane during the fifth inning of Sunday's game against Baltimore. He went 0 for 3 with a walk.
