O's second baseman Jonathan Schoop has sprained MCL, partially torn PCL

MLB, Baltimore Orioles

Baltimore Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop is headed to the disabled list, but it has nothing to do with a panda attack.

Schoop suffered a sprained MCL and a partially torn PCL in his right knee after he awkwardly hit first base in Friday night's 3-2 loss -- not as a result of a hard slide from Boston Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval.

"I was tripping over first base. And then on the last play, I felt like my leg was burning," Schoop said Saturday. "And then walking, I felt like I couldn't move my leg. I woke up stiff this morning,"

The Orioles said the injuries will not require surgery, and are optimistic the 23-year-old will return this season.

"From the symptoms he had last night and where we are now, I feel, not relieved, but I feel better than I thought we had the potential to have," manager Buck Showalter said Saturday. "Just really glad that his ACL is in good shape because that's the one you have to do surgery and it's an extended period of time. This is just a rehab."

In his rookie year last season, Schoop hit .209 with 16 home runs for the reigning AL East Champs. This year he was off to a better start, hitting .259 with three homers.

Ryan Flaherty replaced Schoop at second base for Saturday's game.
