Rays' Longoria does DH duty a day after being hit by pitch

MLB, Tampa Bay Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Evan Longoria will be the designated hitter for the Tampa Bay Rays, one day after getting hit on the left hip by a pitch.

The third baseman got a break from playing the field in Friday night's game against the New York Yankees. He left Thursday night's game in Toronto in the eighth inning because of a bruise.

"Hopefully a day and he'll be back out there," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "But he got squared up pretty good in kind of an awkward spot."

Longoria leads the majors in consecutive games played with 252 entering Friday.

On Friday, Tampa Bay made a series of moves.

Left-handed reliever Jeff Beliveau was put on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore shoulder, and outfielder Mikie Mahtook was optioned to Triple-A Durham. Left-hander C.J. Riefenhauser and infielder Ryan Brett were recalled from Durham.
