ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Alex Rodriguez inched closer to Willie Mays with two more home runs, and the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 on Friday night.

Rodriguez hit a solo shot in the second, driving an 0-1 pitch from Nathan Karns an estimated 471 feet to center. He connected again in the sixth, belting a two-run drive to left against Ernesto Frieri for homer No. 658 -- just two shy of Mays for fourth place on baseball's career list.

Rodriguez, who missed last season because of a drug suspension, also had a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth against Kevin Jepsen (0-1). Brett Gardner, who came in to run for Carlos Beltran after his leadoff single, stole second before Rodriguez singled to center with two out.

After Dellin Betances (2-0) threw a scoreless inning, Andrew Miller got the final four outs for his third save.

Allan Dykstra and Logan Forsythe hit consecutive homers in the fourth to give Tampa Bay a 4-2 lead.

ROYALS 6, ATHLETICS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Paulo Orlando hit a tiebreaking RBI triple in Kansas City's two-run eighth inning, and the Royals beat the A's in their first meeting since last September's dramatic wild-card game.

Omar Infante drove in a pair of runs for the Royals, whose 12-inning victory over the Athletics last year ultimately spurred them all the way to Game 7 of the World Series.

Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis (2-0) each pitched a scoreless inning in relief of the Royals' Jeremy Guthrie, and Greg Holland breezed through the ninth for his fourth save.

Dan Otero (0-1) gave up both runs in the eighth inning for Oakland. Stephen Vogt hit a pair of solo homers, and Ike Davis also went deep for the A's.

NATIONALS 7, PHILLIES 2

WASHINGTON -- Max Scherzer pitched eight strong innings to get his first win with the Nationals, and Bryce Harper hit a three-run homer.

Danny Espinosa also homered and Ryan Zimmerman added a two-run double to help Washington to its third straight win.

Scherzer (1-1) allowed one run and struck out nine in his third start since signed a seven-year, $210 million contract in January.

The Phillies have lost six in a row. Sean O'Sullivan (0-1) went five innings in his second start of the season -- both against the Nationals -- and allowed four runs and five hits.

ANGELS 6, ASTROS 3

HOUSTON -- Angels star Mike Trout homered twice to become the youngest player in history with 100 home runs and 100 stolen bases.

Trout, who has 104 steals, hit a two-run shot off Roberto Hernandez in the sixth inning for his 100th homer, giving the Angels a 3-1 lead. At 23 years and 251 days old, Trout became the youngest player to reach the feat -- breaking the mark set by Alex Rodriguez (23 years, 309 days old).

After the Astros tied it with single runs in the sixth and seventh, Trout hit a three-run shot against reliever Chad Qualls (0-1) in the eighth.

Cesar Ramos (1-0) got the win and Huston Street pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.

TIGERS 2, WHITE SOX 1

DETROIT -- Jose Iglesias hit a game-ending RBI single, and the Tigers improved their major league-best record to 9-1.

Nick Castellanos led off the ninth with a sinking liner to right off Zach Duke (1-1). Castellanos stretched the hit into a double, and while replays appeared to show shortstop Alexei Ramirez tagging him on a toe, second base umpire Brian O'Nora called the runner safe.

Chicago manager Robin Ventura came out to discuss the play with the umpires. Ventura said O'Nora told him that Ramirez had missed him, and the manager returned to the dugout.

Ventura then came back on the field after hearing from the team's replay staff. Umpires ruled the time for a challenge had lapsed because the manager had gone back to the dugout and the Tigers had inserted Andrew Romine to run for Castellanos.

Alex Avila then sacrificed and Iglesias singled to shallow right-center.

Joakim Soria (1-0) got the win with a perfect ninth.

PADRES 5, CUBS 4

CHICAGO -- Top prospect Kris Bryant went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts in his first game with the Cubs, and Wil Myers hit a three-run homer for the Padres.

Chicago selected Bryant's contract from Triple-A Iowa and inserted him into its starting lineup as the cleanup hitter and third baseman. He struck out in his first three at-bats against James Shields (2-0).

Myers connected against Brian Schlitter (0-1) in the seventh. San Diego has won three straight and six of seven.

Shields (2-0) allowed four runs and five hits in six innings with nine strikeouts. Craig Kimbrel pitched a one-hit ninth for his fourth save, retiring Jorge Soler on a game-ending groundout with the potential tying run on second.

RED SOX 3, ORIOLES 2

BOSTON -- Xander Bogaerts blooped a winning single with one out in the ninth inning, sending Boston to the victory.

Mike Napoli began the ninth with a walk from Brian Matusz (0-1) and Daniel Nava sacrificed. Tommy Hunter relieved, and Bogaerts hit a ball over second baseman Jonathan Schoop and in front of right fielder Travis Snider.

Napoli easily beat the throw home on Boston's fourth hit of the game.

Koji Uehara (1-0) struck out two in a perfect ninth.

Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez held the Red Sox hitless for 3 2-3 innings before being ejected when he plunked Pablo Sandoval with a pitch.

In the second, Sandoval took out second baseman Schoop with a hard slide on a force play.

METS 4, MARLINS 1

NEW YORK -- Bartolo Colon hit a tying sacrifice fly for his second RBI in two starts and pitched the Mets to their sixth straight win.

Colon (3-0) gave up Giancarlo Stanton's second homer of the series in the first inning, and then allowed just five more hits through seven.

Michael Cuddyer had a go-ahead single in the sixth for New York, and Juan Lagares made two nimble catches in center field on the night he collected his 2014 Gold Glove award. Jeurys Familia pitched the ninth for his fifth save.

Miami's Brad Hand (0-1) recorded two outs was charged with two runs and three hits.

PIRATES 6, BREWERS 3

PITTSBURGH -- Vance Worley worked six effective innings, and the Pirates snapped out of a lengthy slump.

Worley (1-1) allowed two runs and six hits, and Mark Melancon got the final out for his first save.

Gregory Polanco went 3 for 4 for Pittsburgh. Starling Marte had two hits, including a long two-run homer off Jonathan Broxton in the eighth that broke open a close game.

The Pirates came in hitting just .207 through their first nine games but collected 11 hits against Jimmy Nelson (1-1) and three Milwaukee relievers.

Khris Davis had his sixth career three-hit game for the Brewers, who have lost three in a row.

CARDINALS 6, REDS 1

ST. LOUIS -- Michael Wacha pitched seven strong innings for St. Louis, and Yadier Molina had a bases-clearing double.

Wacha (2-0) scattered five hits to beat Johnny Cueto (0-2) and the Reds for the second time in the past week. Cueto gave up four runs and six hits over seven innings.

Joey Votto gave Cincinnati a first-inning lead with his fourth homer, his third against St. Louis.

BRAVES 8, BLUE JAYS 7

TORONTO -- Pinch-hitter Jonny Gomes belted a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning for Atlanta, and Freddie Freeman added a two-run shot.

Nick Markakis went 4 for 4 and scored three runs as the Braves won for the third time in their last 11 interleague road games.

Batting for Cameron Maybin, Gomes opened the eighth with a drive to center off Brett Cecil (0-1). It was Gomes' 10th career pinch-hit homer, most among active players.

Cody Martin (1-0) worked one inning for the win, Jim Johnson gave up two runs in the eighth and Jason Grilli finished for his fifth save.

Toronto hit five home runs, including four off Julio Teheran, but still lost for the fourth time in five games. Josh Donaldson and Russell Martin both hit two homers, and rookie Devon Travis also connected.

TWINS 3, INDIANS 2, 11 INNINGS

MINNEAPOLIS -- Trevor Plouffe led off the 11th inning with a soaring home run for Minnesota.

Plouffe connected against Bryan Shaw (0-1), sending a drive into the second deck in left field. He was swarmed by teammates as he hit home plate.

Chris Herrmann had two hits, an RBI and some slick baserunning to help the Twins win their third straight.

Brandon Moss homered for the Indians, who fell to 0-3 in games pitched by AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber.

Blaine Boyer (1-1) went 1 1-3 innings for the win.
