Rangers starter Holland leaves after 1 inning

MLB, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Derek Holland has left the home opener for the Texas Rangers after only one inning.

There was no immediate reason given for Holland's departure. The left-hander threw just nine pitches before Anthony Bass took over to start the second inning against the Houston Astros.

Holland missed the first five months last season after left knee surgery, and was slowed early this spring by left shoulder soreness.

Jose Altuve had a single on the first pitch of the game against Holland, but was picked off second base just before Jed Lowrie homered for a 1-0 Astros lead.

The second batter of the game, George Springer, hit a dribbler in front of home plate that Holland fielded and threw to first for the out.

The Rangers have been beset by injuries this year, losing ace Yu Darvish when he needed Tommy John surgery.
