GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Arizona Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale, bench coach Glenn Sherlock and two Arizona pitchers were ejected from a game with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday that featured four hit batsmen.
The Dodgers and Diamondbacks had a nasty bench-clearing brawl in 2013, but that was under a different Arizona management team and before major roster turnover for both teams.
Monday's animosity started when Dodgers' minor league pitcher Chris Anderson hit Mark Trumbo with a pitch and then threw up and in a few times to Aaron Hill.
"Their guys were getting pissed and yelling when Anderson was missing up and in," said Dodgers infielder Justin Turner, who was hit by two pitches. "They were like, 'Come on. Let's go. That's too many pitches up and in.' You can't really say anything when your guy doesn't know where it's going either."
Umpire Tom Woodring warned both benches after Turner was hit the first time, leading to ejections for Allen Webster after he hit Turner with a pitch and Derek Eitel after he hit minor leaguer Dillon Moyer.
"I know [first base umpire] Bill [Miller] was worried about the history of the two teams," Hale said. "I know he's a good umpire. I've known Bill for years. I think he didn't want anything to get out of hand."
"Whatever they want to say, I know our kid wasn't trying to hit Trumbo and I know he threw a couple balls up to Hill, but I know nothing intentional was going on," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "I don't know whether they took it that way or not, but we're not going to start that and there's no reason to start anything like that in spring training."
Turner said Arizona catcher Gerald Laird told him he wasn't being targeted intentionally after he was hit by Arizona starter Daniel Hudson.
"Whether Hudson did it on his own or not, I don't know," Turner said.
The Dodgers won the game 7-4.
