SARASOTA, Fla. -- Admitting he has interest in former All-Star infielder Everth Cabrera, Baltimore Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette says he is unsure whether a contract will be completed this week.
Baltimore negotiated a $2.4 million, one-year contract with the 29-year-old, who was suspended for 50 games in 2013 following Major League Baseball's investigation of the Biogenesis of America clinic.
"His skill and ability is very good, and we think there may be a fit," Duquette said Thursday as the Orioles' spring training camp.
Cabrera was an All-Star in 2013 when he played for the San Diego Padres. He led the NL with 44 steals in 2012.
The switch-hitter could compete for a utility job with Ryan Flaherty and non-roster infielder Jayson Nix.
Cabrera won't be competing with Paul Janish. Duquette said Janish had surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow this week.
