C Gerald Laird, D-backs agree

Free-agent catcher Gerald Laird has agreed with the Arizona Diamondbacks on a one-year, minor league contract that includes an invitation to major league spring training camp, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

Laird, 35, is a .244 hitter with a .658 OPS over parts of 12 big league seasons with Texas, Detroit, St. Louis and Atlanta. He hit .204 in 53 games with Atlanta last season.

The Diamondbacks traded incumbent catcher Miguel Montero to the Chicago Cubs in December and currently have Tuffy Gosewisch and Oscar Hernandez as the only catchers on their 40-man roster.

The D-backs are also expected to take a look at former New York Yankees prospect Peter O'Brien, who came over to Arizona in a July trade for Martin Prado.
