A's deal C Derek Norris to Padres

MLB, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres

The Oakland Athletics traded catcher Derek Norris to the San Diego Padres on Thursday, culminating a busy day for both teams.

Oakland got right-handers Jesse Hahn and R.J. Alvarez for Norris, right-hander Seth Streich and an international signing slot.

Norris told the Bay Area News Group that he thought the trade would provide him a new start, though he enjoyed his stint with the A's.

"I'm excited; this is a big opportunity," Norris said, according to the Bay Area News Group. "A chance to get out of the platoon."

Norris, an All-Star in his third MLB season, posted career highs of .270 in batting average with 10 homers and 55 RBIs for the A's in 2014.

"It's an exciting time," Norris said. "In speaking with the Padres, they believe they will compete this year.

"I don't know," he added. "But I would not be surprised if they made another move or two to compete in the (National League) West."

The Padres indeed also completed a blockbuster trade Thursday for Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp. They also are nearing a deal for right-hander Josh Johnson.

Meanwhile, the Athletics acquired left-hander Eury De La Rosa from the Arizona Diamondbacks for cash.

The A's also designated right-hander Fernando Rodriguez for assignment to clear room on the 40-man roster and released right-hander Jorge De Leon outright.
