D-backs tap J.J. Putz as executive

PHOENIX -- Former closer J.J. Putz has rejoined the Arizona Diamondbacks as a special assistant to president and CEO Derrick Hall.

The team announced Thursday that the 37-year-old Putz will be in uniform during spring training to work with pitchers and will visit the club's minor league affiliates during the regular season.

Putz had a career-high 45 saves for Arizona in 2011, helping the team win the NL West. He was 37-33 with a 3.08 ERA and 189 saves in 572 appearances over 12 seasons with the Seattle Mariners, New York Mets, Chicago White Sox and Arizona.

The former University of Michigan pitcher was released by the Diamondbacks in June.
