Carlos Beltran has elbow surgery

MLB, New York Yankees

NEW YORK -- Carlos Beltran disappointed in his first season as a Yankee, but he did so playing with a bone spur in his right elbow that he knew all year would require surgery.

On Tuesday, Yankees team doctor Christopher Ahmad removed loose pieces and a bone spur from Beltran's right elbow, the team announced. Beltran can start throwing and hitting in six weeks and begin to play again in 12 weeks. He is expected to be ready for spring training.

Beltran's elbow injury limited him to 32 games in right field. His inability to play in the field clogged up the DH spot for Joe Girardi, because he had to use Beltran there predominately. Beltran hit .233 with 15 homers and 49 RBIs in 109 games. His OPS was .703 compared to his career number of .847.

Next season, Beltran is expected to DH some, but he is penciled in as the starting right fielder. The Yankees signed Beltran to a three-year, $45 million contract last winter. He will turn 38 in April.
