Derek Jeter back for Game 2

BALTIMORE -- Derek Jeter returned to the New York Yankees' lineup for the second game of Friday's day-night doubleheader after being hit on the left elbow by a 94 mph fastball Thursday night.

Jeter was not in the clubhouse before the first game of a twinbill between the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles, although X-rays of the elbow taken Thursday night came back negative after he was hit by reliever Brad Boxberger in the eighth inning of a game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium.

In the second game, he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout as the Yankees fell 5-0. In the first game, New York lost 2-1 in 11 innings.

Jeter, who remained in the game, was one of two Yankees to be hit by pitches Thursday; third baseman Chase Headley was hit on the chin by Rays closer Jake McGee in the ninth inning and had to leave the game. Girardi said X-rays of Headley's chin and jaw came back negative, but Headley did suffer lacerations that needed to be stitched, and the Yankees were awaiting the results of a neurological exam to determine if Headley suffered a concussion.

Headley remained in New York for the tests, but Girardi said he would rejoin the Yankees in Baltimore sometime this weekend, although he was not sure when Headley would play again.

"I'm not sure as a player, but you will see him here,'' Girardi said. "All I can tell you is it's day-by-day."

The 40-year-old Jeter, who is in his final season, will be honored sometime this weekend since this will be his last visit to Camden Yards as a player.
