Curt Schilling set to rejoin ESPN

MLB, Boston Red Sox

Recovering after an eight-month battle with mouth cancer that caused him to lose nearly 80 pounds, former Boston Red Sox ace and three-time World Series champion Curt Schilling will rejoin ESPN this week and resume his role as a baseball analyst.

He will resume his duties starting with Thursday night's 10 p.m. edition of "Baseball Tonight" on ESPN2.

"Mentally, physically, [it was] the most difficult eight months of my life," Schilling said in an interview with ESPN's Karl Ravech in which he discusses his battle with cancer. "Certainly the most painful."

Schilling said he was in pain 24 hours a day for four months.

The 47-year-old Schilling, who was diagnosed earlier this year and has been in remission since June, said in August he believes his long-time habit of chewing tobacco caused the cancer.

"The challenging part is, much like the company I ran, this is my fault," he tells Ravech. "I chewed tobacco for thirtysomething years. I was warned and warned year after year, and I didn't pay attention."

Schilling joined ESPN as an analyst on "Baseball Tonight" in 2010 and was added to the "Sunday Night Baseball" booth over the winter. He will return to the road for "Sunday Night Baseball" as soon as he is comfortable.

Schilling pitched in the majors for 20 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies, Arizona Diamondbacks and Red Sox. The six-time All-Star finished with a career record of 216-146 and a 3.46 ERA. His 3,116 strikeouts rank 15th all time. He won two World Series titles with the Red Sox and one with the Diamondbacks.
