DENVER -- How things have changed for the Colorado Rockies in three months.
Back on May 22, when their game against the San Francisco Giants was suspended because of rain, they were three games out of the NL West lead and had their biggest stars in the lineup.
When play resumed Monday, the Rockies were without injured Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez and Michael Cuddyer and they fell to 23 games off the division lead after losing to the Giants 4-2 in the conclusion of their suspened game.
Hunter Pence hit a tiebreaking double in the eighth and, more than three months after he homered in the early innings, keyed the Giants' delayed victory.
The game restarted tied at 2 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and a runner on first. Jeremy Affeldt struck out pinch-hitter Josh Rutledge to end the inning.
Affeldt (4-2) earned the win with 1 1-3 hitless innings. Before Affeldt took over, David Huff was the pitcher of record for the Giants -- he was traded to the New York Yankees on June 11.
Pence, who homered in the fourth inning on May 22, doubled home Andrew Susac. Pinch-hitter Travis Ishikawa added an RBI single.
"Pence is a clutch hitter, a good hitter," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "He put together a good at bat."
Santiago Casilla -- on the disabled list when this game initially began -- got his 14th save in 18 chances.
Christian Friedrich (0-4) took the loss.
Righty Tim Hudson started the regularly scheduled game later Monday. Hudson was the starter on May 22, going three innings before exiting because of the lengthy weather delay.
There were several oddities in this game because of the long layoff.
Susac's single in the eighth will now show up as his first hit in the majors, at least in the chronology of this season's boxscores. Until Monday, his first hit was listed as July 30, a few days after he was promoted from Triple-A.
Tyler Colvin and Brandon Hicks, who both started that game in May for the Giants, were later designated for assignment.
The Rockies have four players appearing in the final box now on the DL -- Tulowitzki, Cuddyer, catcher Wilin Rosario and righty Tommy Kahnle.
On May 22, a run scored when Rosario grounded into a double play in the fifth, making it 5-all. An inning later, the umpires suspended the game after a second rain delay.
"We were in good position," Weiss recalled. "We had 10 hits at that point in the game. We looked like we were on our way." Three months later, that's all changed.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Giants: INF Brandon Belt (concussion) remains about a week away from resuming baseball-related activities.
Rockies: LHP Boone Logan (left elbow) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list, ending his season. The 30-year-old Logan was 2-3 with a 6.84 ERA.
UP NEXT
Giants: RHP Yusmeiro Petit (4-3, 3.44 ERA) will make his eighth start of the season on Tuesday. He beat the Rockies 4-1 last Thursday.
Rockies: RHP Jordan Lyles is making a second straight start against the Giants. He surrendered one run in six innings during a no-decision last week.
THE CALL-UPS
Giants: With rosters expanding Monday, the Giants recalled LHP Mike Kickham and OF Juan Perez from Triple-A Fresno. They also purchased the contracts of INF Chris Dominguez and C Guillermo Quiroz from Fresno, along with recalling RHP Hunter Strickland from Double-A Richmond.
Rockies: Colorado brought up 1B Ben Paulsen and LHP Yohan Flande from Triple-A Colorado Springs. The team also selected the contract of INF Rafael Ynoa from Colorado Springs.
