CHICAGO -- Chris Sale struck out a season-high 13 in seven innings, beating Max Scherzer in a matchup of All-Star aces and leading the Chicago White Sox past the Detroit Tigers 6-3 in the first game of a day-night doubleheader Saturday.

Adam Dunn hit a two-run homer and Tyler Flowers also went deep against Scherzer (15-5), who fanned 11 and walked none in 6 2-3 innings. But he was touched up for six runs, five earned, and nine hits.

Sale (11-3) struck out at least 10 for the 17th time in his career, tying Hall of Famer Ed Walsh for the franchise record. The left-hander reached that figure in 81 major league starts -- Walsh made 312 for the White Sox from 1904-1916.

Sale allowed three runs and six hits. Jake Petricka pitched the ninth for his 10th save.

Victor Martinez and Ian Kinsler homered for the Tigers, who began the day with a one-game lead over Seattle for the second AL wild card.

BLUE JAYS 2, YANKEES 0

TORONTO -- Drew Hutchison pitched seven innings for Toronto, and Jose Bautista homered for the fourth straight game.

Mark Teixeira's fourth-inning double was the only hit allowed by Hutchison (9-11), who walked two and struck out nine.

Aaron Sanchez retired all six batters he faced for his first major league save as the Blue Jays improved to 8-17 in August.

Bautista hit a two-out, two-run homer off Michael Pineda (3-3) in the first.

CUBS 5, CARDINALS 1, GAME 1

ST. LOUIS -- Starlin Castro hit one of Chicago's three solo homers, and Felix Doubront pitched seven strong innings in his National League debut.

Logan Watkins and Chris Valaika also connected for Chicago in the makeup of a May 14 rainout. The last-place Cubs hit four home runs Friday, giving them seven in two games against the Cardinals.

St. Louis has lost four in a row for the second time this season. The Cardinals began the day one game ahead of Atlanta and 1½ up on Pittsburgh for the second NL wild card.

Chris Coghlan had a two-run single for the Cubs, who have won nine of 13.

Doubront (1-0) scattered seven hits in his return from the disabled list.

St. Louis' Justin Masterson (2-3) gave up three homers and five earned runs in 4 1-3 innings in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

PIRATES 3, REDS 2

PITTSBURGH -- Neil Walker hit a three-run homer in the first inning, sending Pittsburgh to its fourth straight victory.

Walker's 18th home run put the Pirates ahead 3-0 against Alfredo Simon four batters into the game. Pittsburgh's winning streak matches its longest of the season.

Vance Worley (6-4) allowed two runs -- one earned -- and three hits in 6 1-3 innings to snap a career-worst, three-start skid. Mark Melancon pitched a perfect ninth for his 26th save.

Despite retiring 12 batters in a row between the third and sixth, Simon (13-9) fell to 1-6 since pitching in his first All-Star game last month.

Todd Frazier homered for the Reds, who lost their seventh road game in a row.
