Daniel Murphy on DL with calf strain

MLB, New York Mets

NEW YORK -- Of all the players on the New York Mets' roster, one is hitting .300.

And now Daniel Murphy is going on the disabled list.

The strained right calf that has kept Murphy out of the lineup all this week wasn't getting better, so the Mets announced after Thursday's 6-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves that they were putting him on the DL. Murphy had an MRI on the calf Thursday.

To replace Murphy on the roster, the Mets called up 20-year-old second baseman Dilson Herrera. Herrera was hitting .340 with 10 home runs for Double-A Binghamton.

The Mets acquired Herrera from the Pittsburgh Pirates in last year's Marlon Byrd trade. Pitcher Vic Black, the other player acquired for Byrd, went on the DL on Thursday with a herniated disk in his neck.

Murphy, the Mets' lone All-Star, has a .301 batting average in 126 games.

"It's frustrating," he said. "It ended up being a little worse than I thought."

Murphy said doctors told him they would take a closer look at his MRI on Friday. He declined to make a guess on how soon he'll be able to return.

Black, who had an epidural in his neck, said he does expect to be ready to return when his DL time expires.
