SAN FRANCISCO -- Yusmeiro Petit set a major league record when he retired his 46th batter in a row, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 4-1 on Thursday for their third straight win.

Petit (4-3) got the first eight Colorado hitters, establishing the mark by striking out Charlie Culberson. That broke Mark Buehrle's record of 45 straight with the Chicago White Sox in 2009.

Petit's streak covered eight games, six of them in relief. He also surpassed Jim Barr's NL record of 41 in a row with the Giants in 1972.

The sellout crowd of 41,017 at AT&T Park gave Petit a standing ovation after he fanned Culberson. The string ended two pitches later when the next batter, Rockies starter Jordan Lyles, doubled to left field. Charlie Blackmon followed with a single to drive in Colorado's only run.

Petit, a 29-year-old journeyman from Venezuela, struck out nine in six innings. Santiago Casilla got three outs for his 12th save.

Lyles (6-2) allowed three runs and four hits in six innings.

ORIOLES 5, RAYS 4

BALTIMORE -- J.J. Hardy singled in the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning, and Baltimore beat Tampa Bay to lengthen its lead in the AL East.

Steve Pearce homered for the Orioles, who took three of four from the sinking Rays. The victory, combined with the Yankees' loss to Detroit, put Baltimore seven games ahead of New York with 30 games remaining.

With the score 4-all in the seventh, Nelson Cruz doubled with two outs off Kirby Yates (0-2). After Chris Davis received an intentional walk, Hardy hit an opposite-field bloop to right that gave the Orioles their first lead.

Andrew Miller (4-5) pitched 1 2-3 hitless innings and Zach Britton worked a perfect ninth for his 29th save.

Evan Longoria homered and drove in two runs for the Rays.

TWINS 11, ROYALS 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Minnesota's Jordan Schafer tied a career high with four RBIs, including a two-run single in the 10th inning.

Bruce Chen (2-4), the sixth pitcher for the AL Central-leading Royals, gave up five hits and walked two in the 10th.

Eduardo Nunez singled home the go-ahead run and Brian Dozier added a two-run double. Kurt Suzuki capped the burst with an RBI double for his third hit of the game.

Schafer had three hits and extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Anthony Swarzak (3-1) picked up the victory.

Kansas City's Alex Gordon homered off Ryan Pressly in the seventh, tying it at 5.

TIGERS 3, YANKEES 2

DETROIT -- Alex Avila hit an RBI single with two out in the bottom of the ninth, lifting Detroit to the win.

A day after David Price gave up nine straight hits, the Tigers sent Kyle Lobstein to the mound for his first major league start. The rookie performed well, allowing one earned run in six innings.

Then Detroit's bullpen held off New York until the Tigers scored in the ninth off Shawn Kelley (2-5). Victor Martinez led off with a double through a shifted infield, and then Kelley walked J.D. Martinez before striking out Nick Castellanos and pinch-hitter Torii Hunter.

Avila followed with a drive to the wall in right. Kelley flung his glove to the ground as soon as Avila connected.

Phil Coke (2-2) got one out for the win.

INDIANS 3, WHITE SOX 2

CHICAGO -- Cleveland's Carlos Carrasco pitched into the seventh inning, and Michael Bourn had two triples among his three hits.

Jason Kipnis and Michael Brantley each singled in a run for the Indians, who have won four of five and 11 of 16 overall to remain in the hunt for an AL wild card.

Alexei Ramirez had two hits for the White Sox, and John Danks (9-9) pitched six solid innings.

Carrasco (6-4) improved to 3-0 with a sparkling 0.73 ERA in four starts since he returned to the rotation. He struck out seven in 6 2-3 innings while holding the White Sox to one run and four hits.

Chicago closed to 3-2 on Adam Dunn's RBI single in the eighth against Cody Allen, who struck out the next four batters for his 18th save in 19 attempts.

BRAVES 6, METS 1

ATLANTA -- Atlanta's Mike Minor took a two-hit shutout into the eighth inning after hitting a double and single himself.

Minor (6-8) had an RBI single in the second for the game's first run, and then doubled and scored in the eighth.

Minor was perfect for four innings before Lucas Duda led off the fifth with a single that just barely touched the glove of leaping shortstop Andrelton Simmons.

The Mets didn't have a runner in scoring position until Travis d'Arnaud opened the eighth with a double. Eric Campbell followed with an RBI single, finishing Minor.

Jonathon Niese (7-10) pitched into the eighth inning, when Atlanta scored twice for a 3-0 lead.

ASTROS 4, RANGERS 2

HOUSTON -- Jason Castro hit a grand slam for Houston, and Collin McHugh threw seven solid innings.

McHugh (7-9) earned his third straight win, allowing two runs and eight hits while striking out six.

In his six August starts, McHugh gave up eight runs over 37 2-3 innings.

Castro snapped an 0-for-20 slump with a single in the second. In the fifth, he wiped out Texas' 2-0 lead with his second career grand slam, a drive off Ramon Mendez (0-1).

Tony Sipp worked the ninth for his second save.

REDS 7, CUBS 2

CINCINNATI -- Billy Hamilton stole his 51st base and Cincinnati swiped six in all.

Zack Cozart and Todd Frazier each stole two bases, and Kristopher Negron added one more.

The Reds had six steals in the first four innings, using six hits and four walks to build a 6-0 lead against Jake Arrieta (7-5).

Cincinnati's Dylan Axelrod (1-0) struck out eight while pitching five scoreless innings.

Cozart had three hits, including a double, and scored three times.
