Andrew McCutchen (rib) exits game

PITTSBURGH -- Center fielder Andrew McCutchen left Pittsburgh's 5-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals with left rib discomfort.

McCutchen departed after flying out to right in the bottom of the fifth inning Tuesday night. It's uncertain whether he will be available Wednesday.

"Today caught up to him in a couple of different ways," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said of the reigning National League MVP. "Tonight got to be a point where we didn't think we needed to push any farther than he did."

McCutchen spent 15 days on the disabled list with fractured rib cartilage earlier this month and appeared to aggravate the injury in the third inning when he collided with the wall while tracking down a fly ball by Matt Carpenter.

McCutchen slammed into the green padding and bent over for several seconds before gingerly making his way to the dugout. He remained in the game for two more plate appearances but grimaced in pain after flying out in the fifth.
