Matt Cain likely will have surgery

NEW YORK -- Matt Cain has bone chips in his right elbow, and the San Francisco Giants right-hander likely will have surgery that would end his 2014 season.

Cain said Friday that he was still trying to decide whether to have the surgery now or try to pitch through the pain, but Giants manager Bruce Bochy later told reporters that he expects Cain is done for the year.

Cain saw Dr. James Andrews this week, saw Dr. David Altchek on Friday and consulted with another doctor as well. All three doctors agreed that the bone chips are the cause of the problems Cain has been having, and that they will need to be taken out.

"I've had them for 10 years," Cain said. "They've always been there. Now they're mad, and they're letting me know about it."

Cain played catch on flat ground Friday afternoon, and said that he was still pondering the question of when he would have the surgery.

"I think a lot depends on what my elbow is going to tell me," Cain said.
