Brewers acquire OF Gerardo Parra

MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, Arizona Diamondbacks

The Milwaukee Brewers added a veteran bat for the stretch drive Thursday when they acquired outfielder Gerardo Parra from the Arizona Diamondbacks for minor league outfielder Mitch Haniger and lefty pitcher Anthony Banda.

Parra, 27, is having a down year with a .259 batting average and a .667 OPS in 104 games. But he's a solid defender and a versatile outfielder who can play left field, center and right.

The Diamondbacks recently began shopping Parra, according to a baseball source, because of his declining performance and rising cost. He's making $4.85 million this season and is eligible for salary arbitration this winter.

Parra will join a talented Milwaukee outfield that already features former MVP Ryan Braun, All-Star center fielder Carlos Gomez and emerging slugger Khris Davis, who has 17 home runs this season.

Haniger, a supplemental first-round pick by Milwaukee in the 2012 draft, was rated the Brewers' No. 3 prospect by Baseball America going into this season. He's hitting .255 with 10 homers and a .416 slugging percentage in 67 games with Double-A Huntsville.

Banda, a 10th-round pick in the 2012 draft, is 6-6 with a 3.66 ERA for Wisconsin in the Class A Midwest League this season.

The Diamondbacks, who also traded Martin Prado to the Yankees, adjusted their roster by bringing up infielder Andy Marte and outfielder Roger Kieschnick from Triple-A Reno.

The 30-year-old Marte hit .330 with 13 home runs and 62 RBIs in 102 games for Reno. In 302 games in six seasons in the majors with Atlanta and Cleveland, he has hit .218 with 20 home runs and 96 RBIs.

Kieschnick, 27, hit .207 with a double, home run and two RBIs in 19 games in two stints for Arizona this season. In 74 games for Reno, he hit .268 with 11 homers and 34 RBIs.
