George W. Bush honors Derek Jeter

New York Yankees

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Derek Jeter got the boot -- a pair of them, actually -- a check, and a visit from a former president on Wednesday night in a pregame ceremony commemorating his final game at Globe Life Park, home of the Texas Rangers.

Greeted at home plate by former Rangers Michael Young and Ivan Rodriguez -- a teammate of Jeter's with the 2008 Yankees -- Jeter was presented with a pair of black cowboy boots emblazoned with his name, the Yankees logo and the number 2. He also was given a $10,000 check for his Turn 2 Foundation.

Then, the Rangers brought out former Rangers owner George W. Bush, who later spent eight years in the White House, to present Jeter with a framed autographed photo of himself and Bush from the 2001 World Series at Yankee Stadium.

"I've enjoyed coming here and playing,'' Jeter said Monday night, before the first game of the three-game series. "We've had some good battles with them in the postseason, both on the good side and the bad side for us. But I've always enjoyed playing in this stadium. It's one of the places I'll miss playing.''

No wonder -- Jeter's career average in Arlington entering Wednesday's game was .333 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI in 72 games. In the first two games of the series, Jeter had five hits in nine at-bats before going 0-for-4 in Wednesday's 3-2 loss.
