Yasiel Puig, Hanley Ramirez out

MLB, Los Angeles Dodgers

PITTSBURGH -- Hanley Ramirez and Yasiel Puig, both of whom were struck in the hand by pitches in the Los Angeles Dodgers' weekend series in St. Louis, were out of the lineup again on Tuesday.

Both Ramirez and Puig had X-rays Monday that came back negative. Both players did not play Monday in the Dodgers' 5-2 win over the Pirates.

However, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he doesn't believe either player needs to go on the disabled list. Mattingly said he's optimistic both players will be available to pinch hit on Tuesday night and called them "day to day."

Puig was struck in the left hand by a Joe Kelly curveball Saturday night. Ramirez was hit by two pitches Sunday night, the second of which was a 99-mph Trevor Rosenthal fastball near his left wrist in the ninth inning.

Ramirez was walking around the Dodgers' clubhouse Monday squeezing a rubber ball in his left hand.

With Puig out, Mattingly chose to put Matt Kemp in right field again on Tuesday, rather than move him back to his traditional position, center field. The Dodgers moved Kemp to left field in late May citing his poor defense in center. Kemp also played in right field Monday night. Andre Ethier was back in center on Tuesday.

"I look at Matt as a great athlete, capable of playing in multiple spots," Mattingly said Monday. Kemp and his agent have both said recently he would like to return to center field. "It is what it is right now. Let's just leave it at that," Mattingly said. "I don't want to have to go into all this stuff again. It's ridiculous."
