CLEVELAND -- The New York Yankees have placed outfielder Carlos Beltran on the seven-day concussion list.
Beltran was hit in the face with a ball during batting practice Wednesday. The ball caromed off the batting cage and hit him, breaking his nose.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Beltran was sent back to New York today after a neurologist read the CAT Scan taken Wednesday night and determined he had suffered a concussion. Beltran was also to be examined for small fractures to his nose and the area of his upper lip.
"He has the fractures in the nose, and we don't think it's going to require [surgery], but we've got to make sure,'' Girardi said. "We've got to get that checked out, so he went back to New York to make sure his nose is going to be OK. We just felt that it was probably best that he didn't play for a few days.''
Girardi said he expects Beltran to be ready to return to the team for the first game after the All-Star break Friday, July 18.
Beltran missed the first two games of the series against Cleveland with soreness behind his right knee and was in Wednesday's original lineup as the designated hitter. Beltran, a switch-hitter, is batting .216 with nine homers and 28 RBIs.
Yangervis Solarte was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre and is playing third base Thursday against the Indians.
