Darwin Barney, Cubs agree on deal

MLB, Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs and second baseman Darwin Barney avoided arbitration Thursday, agreeing to a one-year deal that a source tells ESPNChicago.com's Jesse Rogers is for $2.3 million.

Barney, who won a Gold Glove in 2012 and was a finalist last season, batted just .208 with a .266 on-base percentage. He is the latest Cub to avoid arbitration, joining pitchers Travis Wood, Pedro Strop and James Russell, infielder Luis Valbuena and outfielders Justin Ruggiano and Nate Schierholtz.

Pitcher Jeff Samardzija is the only remaining arbitration-eligible Cub unsigned.

No Cubs player has gone to arbitration since the current front office took over after the 2011 season.
