Miggy extension a bad idea

MLB, Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers made major news this week by sending first baseman Prince Fielder to the Texas Rangers for second baseman Ian Kinsler. The move has many ramifications, and two of them directly involve Miguel Cabrera, the two-time reigning AL MVP.

For starters, this move opens up first base for Cabrera, where his bat will certainly play and he will be less of a defensive liability than he was at third. More important, even when you factor in the money Detroit is sending to Texas to even this deal out, Kinlser is signed for fewer years at less money per year than Fielder, which means the Tigers now have more money to give lucrative contract extensions to the likes of Max Scherzer and Cabrera.

You may hear a lot in the coming days about how the Tigers are now set up well to sign Cabrera for many more years. But just because they can doesn't mean they should. In fact, when it comes to negotiating Miggy's extension, Detroit should hold off as long as possible -- possibly until he is a free agent.
