Congrats to Jeter for passing one of the most overrated players in baseball history.

I'm definitely not a Yankee fan, but how could I not be a Jeter fan? He's an ambassador to the game. Carry on, El Capitán, you can do anything you want... and please do.

As I said when the media began floating this idea at the end of 2009 Jeter is not going to break Rose's record nor is he going to even get near it. Bernie WIlliams was finished as an impact player after 2002 yet he hung around for another four seasons. This may be Jeter's 2002 for all we know. Do you really see Jeter hanging around the game for another four or five years, hitting .260 to .270 every year, with no power, no stolen bases, and spending time chasing down balls in left field, a position he's never played at the major league level? He's got way too much pride to do that.

It's not really a question of Jeter deciding to pursue 4,000 hits, it's a question of father time allowing him. Jeter has been tremendously durable, playing at a high level since the mid-90s. That said, he is not going to reach 4,000+ hits. He's 38, plays SS, and has shown some evidence of decline since 2010. Using Rose as the example, Rose's last strong year with the bat was at age 40. He hung around for years as a league average and below hitter for the next five years, while also bouncing between positions and teams. Derek Jeter is not going to play for other teams, and I doubt he'll even play another position. My guess is he takes the player option in 2014 and retires after that season, finishing somewhere in the 3500-3600 hit range.

Jeter will have around 3700 hits by the end of 2014 season if he stays healthy... a mere 556 hits from Pete Rose!!! Keep rollin' DJ!!!

Congrats to Jeter for yet another accomplishment in his distinguished career. Cal and others are setting the table for you at Cooperstown 5 years after you retire as you will be a 1st ballot highest percentage ever elected Hall of Famer as a result of this idiot steriod era. You do things the right way and will be a landslide electee as a result.

There is a saying that it was Babe Ruth who saved baseball. Guys like Jeter are the ones who saved baseball this time from the steroid users. I remember reading where AFraud was again in public relation turmoil. Jeter said to AFraud why dont you just do what I do I do. What Jeter was saying to AFraud was why you dont conduct yourself the way I do. If you just look at the Box scores each day you will not see what makes his a great player. Jeter is like Baseball you need to both watch and follow him to see his greatness. First ballot Hall of Famer

How many athletes at this day and age can stay as humble and classy when achieving such greatness? The haters need to step back and realize what DJ is doing...

Hats of to Jeter. He shows up every night to play ball and gives 100% every time. Not a big fan of DJ but happy to see his hard work to pay off.

No chance of catching Rose. Ichiro is a much better hitter and played on really crappy teams for his MLB career. Imagine what he'd have if he hit in the yankees lineup

Playing on a crappy team wouldn't have a real influence on his ability to put a ball in play.

It would be cool to see him hit 4000 but I doubt it. Ichiro is also 38 years old and is closing in on 3800 "professional" hits. Would be cool if he could make it to 3000 in the Majors before he retires.
